St Marychurch on The English Riviera

St Marychurch is in reality now a district within the resort of Torquay but it was originally a distinct village with its own clear identity. A lot of that remains true today and the heart of St Marychurch is Fore Street where you still find a very vibrant high street full of independent traders, cafes and the odd pub or two. Our Falstone Apartment is close to the very centre of St Marychurch and just a short stroll to Babbacombe Downs.

The local legend was that St Marychurch formally became part of Torquay after Torquay Council saw that St Marychurch had their own steam roller - something which they didn't have - and made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

St Marychurch - Fore Street

Fore Street - St Marychurch

Fore Street in St Marychurch is something of rarity these days as it is a High Street that seems to be doing pretty well. It is absolutely packed with independent traders of just about every kind. There is a butcher, a greengrocer, a bakery, a fishmonger, antique shops, hardware stores, a shoe shop, pharmacy, post office, cafes, pubs, a clothes shop and a florist to name just a few.

It is one of the few pedestrianisations which seem to have actually worked and it is a pleasure to stroll up and down this busy street which is just a six or seven minute stroll from our Falstone Apartment
