St Marychurch is in reality now a district within the resort of Torquay but it was originally a distinct village with its own clear identity. A lot of that remains true today and the heart of St Marychurch is Fore Street where you still find a very vibrant high street full of independent traders, cafes and the odd pub or two. Our Falstone Apartment is close to the very centre of St Marychurch and just a short stroll to Babbacombe Downs.
The local legend was that St Marychurch formally became part of Torquay after Torquay Council saw that St Marychurch had their own steam roller - something which they didn't have - and made them an offer they couldn't refuse.
Fore Street in St Marychurch is something of rarity these days as it is a High Street that seems to be doing pretty well. It is absolutely packed with independent traders of just about every kind. There is a butcher, a greengrocer, a bakery, a fishmonger, antique shops, hardware stores, a shoe shop, pharmacy, post office, cafes, pubs, a clothes shop and a florist to name just a few.
It is one of the few pedestrianisations which seem to have actually worked and it is a pleasure to stroll up and down this busy street which is just a six or seven minute stroll from our Falstone Apartment.
During the day, Fore Street has an abundance of cafes to choose from. many of them have tables and chairs outside so that you can enjoy people watching along with your snack. Amongst these cafes is The Silver Goose which offers a great menu including specials and who can accommodate specialist diets such as gluten free.
In the evening time there are a couple of pubs which also offer food. Amongst these is The Dolphin which serves food till 8pm each evening with a menu of quality pub style food. This pub is just a five minute walk from our Falstone Apartment and also serves great value Sunday lunches.
Slightly further afield (a six or seven minute walk from St Marychurch is the beautiful Babbacombe Downs area where there are numerous other places to eat.
St Marychurch makes a great base for anyone wanting to explore all of the attractions of The English Riviera and south Devon but it also is home to attractions of its own.
In the very centre of St Marychurch is the wonderful Bygones. This Torquay institution is home to an amazing array of artefacts displayed imaginatively - as it is inside it is also perfect for those days when the sun doesn't shine.
Close by is another great insitution; Babbacombe Model Village. This amazing attraction continually re-invents itself and is as fresh today as it was when it was established in the sixties.
Also, in the centre of St Marychurch is the hidden gem of The Tessier Garden which is a little oasis of calm and tranquility.
A ten minute walk from here is Babbacombe Downs and The Babbacombe Cliff Railway which takes visitors down to the beautiful Oddicombe Beach.
