The Labour Government is planning to introduce a "tourism levy" which is a tourism tax. There will be no upper limit on how much that tax can be. The hospitality sector has been hit by attack after attack from the politicians.
Here's what means for us all
- An extra percentage will be added to your bill just so that you can stay in accommodation in your own country.
- Businesses will have to administer the system - we will be unpaid tax collectors for the Government.
- In many poorer areas businesses won't actually be able to increase their charges and will go bust - less accommodation will mean ultimatelky prices will be forced up.
- Paying more for accommodation means there is less to spend in shops, attractions, bars, cafes and restaurants - our resorts will become devastated ghosts of their former selves.
- About 30,000 more jobs will be lost in hospitality.
The lies they tell to justify the tourism tax.
Lie 1
When we go abroad, we pay a toursim tax to stay in hotels etc, so it's just making Britain like the rest of the World.
The truth is that in the UK we pay 20% VAT whereas most foreign countries have VAT rates on accommodation much lower than ours - in many cases half of ours.
(Germany it is 7%. France, Spain and Italy it is 10%. On Greek islands it is as low as 9%)
Lie 2
The tourism tax will generate millions of pounds of extra spending for the areas where it is levied.
The truth is that they will quietly start withdrawing other money from the councils . They introduced Business Improvement Districts in places like Torbay. We were told that the Councils would no longer fund tourism and businesses would pay a BID levy to fund it which we have done
Did that result in the Councils having more money to spend on other local services? No, of course not. Funding was cut elsewhere so we end up no better off BUT paying more for worse services.
Lie 3.
Tourism places a strain on local services and tourists don't make a fair contribution.
The truth is Local tourism businesses pay business rates, VAT, NI contributions, bid levies and business tax . Tourism businesses employ local tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, plasterers. Tourism businesses use local suppliers for food, laundry and furnishings. Local tourism businesses employ local people and put money back into the economy. Without the money brought in by tourism businesses, many restaurants, bars, cafes, theatres etc used by locals would not have enough money to survive.
The unfairness of the tourism tax
The tourism tax is massively unfair.
British people are more highly taxed now than in the whole history of our country.
Illegal migrants who have broken into our country and who go into 4 star hotels will not pay the tourism tax.
The greedy, grasping MPs who impose the tax on you will be able to claim any tax they pay as a business expense
Children will pay the tourism tax.
People on low incomes will pay the same rate of tax as wealthy people.
Hospitality businesses are heavily taxed and overburdened with red tape.
Your dog will pay the tourism tax

These hateful Labour MPs will make your four legged companion pay the tourism tax - whether or not it is included in the room rate or added as an extra.

Tell your MP - No to a tourism tax - while you can!
Our MP's will impose the tourism tax on YOU but they will be able to claim it as an expense themselves.
Message them to tell them you oppose it.
Lots of people have and MPs with small majorities are beginning to get nervous.
